Sparkie didn't want to let go. If she let go, then Julia would leave, and she'd be all alone here, surrounded by total strangers. So she clung to Julia's shirt as hard as her little paws would let her.

[break][break]"It's gonna be okay, Sparkie, I promise," Julia said, stroking the Pichu's trembling head. "They'll take real good care of you here, and I'll be back before you know it. Maybe you'll even make a new friend!"

[break][break]Julia didn't want to leave Sparkie at Route 117's Daycare, but she was going on a mission for the Rangers and didn't want Sparkie to get hurt. She'd explained that gently to Sparkie, how it'd be best for her to stay out of harm's way for now, but it didn't make the Pichu any less reluctant. Sparkie let out a sad little squeak and looked at Julia with the best sad eyes she could muster. And she could muster some really good sad eyes in that moment.

[break][break]Julia frowned. She knew this was going to be difficult, but she hadn't expected it to be this bad. Then again... she had found Sparkie all alone in that forest with no family in sight. No wonder she was so afraid of being separated from Julia; she'd already been separated from her birth family.

[break][break]The Ranger smiled gently. "I'm gonna come back. I swear it. And when I do, you, me, Chester, and Lazuli can all play together and eat all kinds of tasty treats, okay?"

[break][break]Sparkie stared at her Trainer with those teary eyes for several tense seconds. She squeaked inquisitively.

[break][break]"Promise," Julia said.

[break][break]More tense silence. Finally, with the tiniest of smiles, Sparkie nodded.

[break][break]"Attagirl!" Julia kissed the Pichu's head. "Come on, let's get you settled in."

[break]A few minutes later, Sparkie hid in the tall grass of the Daycare's fields, watching other, larger Pokémon socialize and play together. Julia had said that maybe she'd make a new friend, but... Her ears folded down. Ahh, there was no way she could go out there! Oh, Julia, hurry up and come back already!

Shalin had run into an unexpected snag at the arcade she intended to meet Josh at for a good old-fashioned music game showdown; they had implemented a policy that Pokémon over 18 inches tall were no longer permitted inside! Sensible, given how much expensive equipment was inside and how a Pokémon that wasn't well-behaved could cause complaints among players, but it was still disappointing. She couldn't help but smile, seeing an Electrike in the back running circles around several of the Pokémon there. Ah, the vigor of youth...

The blonde picked her Litleo up and gave her an affectionate belly rub. "I'll be back late this afternoon. Now you run along and make some new friends for me, okay?" Kiara was teary-eyed at first but reluctantly accepted she would be spending time away from her trainer's beaming face, even giving Shalin a big kiss. She couldn't help but laugh as she set her fire-type back down and checked her Pokémon in.

Once Shalin had left, the lioness cub easily found the facility's back door leading out to a fairly large, fenced field away from the Pokémon that sought peace and quiet indoors. Most of the Pokémon outside were fleet-of-foot. Her eyes shifted between a pair of Poochyena having a mock battle but still being playful about it, and an Electrike that was running circles around other Pokémon at speeds faster than anything his size had the right to.

Once the battle between the two Poochyena had resolved, Kiara wanted to grab the Electrike's attention by showing off some of her own speed. She roared toward the electric-type, garnering attention from several other Pokémon but not the one that was discharging electricity stored in its paws. If that didn't get the yellow Pokémon's attention, nothing would.

Once the others had gone back to what they were doing, Kiara decided she was going to try to run from one end of the field to the other as quickly as possible. It wasn't until a little over halfway through the field that she noticed the grass on this side hadn't been cut in quite some time! Wait, was that a yellow and black ear poking out of the grass straight ahead? Oh, no! Kiara slammed on the brakes the best she could, uncertain she would be able to avoid a collision...

Sparkie jumped at the sound of a roar, sparks flying from her cheeks from the surprise. And to make things worse, that jolt startled her even more, causing her to fall back onto her bottom. She let out a dizzy squeak and swayed for a moment. She managed to snap herself out of it with a shake of her head, but where had that roar come from? She peered through the tall grass to see a Litleo... running right toward her?!

[break][break]She let out an alarmed squeal and tried to scramble to her feet, but she couldn't get up fast enough to get out of the way. She was lucky that Kiara had put on the brakes, because the collision could have been a lot worse, but it still sent the Pichu tumbling to the grass. For a moment, the world spun, and her eyes rolled in an attempt to keep up with it. She ended up flat on her back, staring at two skies—wait, no, there was only one, she was just that dizzy.

[break][break]She blinked a few times to clear her vision. The world slowly merged back together. And then, once her brain had caught up to what had just happened, she sniffled and let out a sad little squeak, tears already welling up in her eyes.

Kiara's paws were designed to take a lot of punishment from high speed runs. They felt a little firm from the sudden deceleration that would have certainly caused squealing if on a harder surface, but all she did was carve a path through the tall grass. At the least, it looked like the Pichu was just shaken up from the fire-type turning a dangerous, possibly deadly, situation into a mere low speed crash.

A wild Litleo would have pounced such a Pokémon and made it a meal easily; after all, the species were natural predators. This Litleo, though, felt dreadful when the tiny Electric-type began sobbing. She let out an affectionate purr and gently pat the Pichu's belly with her paw, as to apologize to the younger Pokémon. It seemed Shalin's Pokémon were just as compassionate as she was!

Sparkie squeaked at the touch, and her little body jumped and let out another surprised electrical discharge, though this one was much weaker, more like the jolt of a static shock from a fuzzy blanket. Kiara might have been able to feel the way Sparkie's heart raced if she touched her long enough. At first, her instincts screamed at her, telling her that this was a dangerous predator. Her muscles tensed, ready to run, but when it came to fight or flight, her body chose freeze.

[break][break]But wait... that touch hadn't been the pinning paw of a predator—it had been a gentle pat of apology accompanied by a reassuring purr! Sparkie hastily wiped her eyes with her paws and sprang to her feet.

[break][break]"It's okay!" she squeaked out. "It kinda scared me, but I'm okay!" "Kinda" was an understatement here, given her reaction. "Um, sorry I shocked you... I didn't mean to."

"I'm just glad you're okay!" Kiara chirped back, the Litleo still full of energy despite having to slam on the brakes to avoid running over Sparkie. At the rate was going, she was going to have sore feet when Master returned. They would heal just fine, though! Master took good care of her, like she did every single one of her Pokémon. "Master calls me Kiara! What does your master call you?"

The fire-type's eyes shifted all over the Daycare's giant enclosure. She sat down next to Sparkie and shared stories of Shalin's other Pokémon with the Pichu, including Flit the Yanmega. Kiara could not stand the noise Flit's wings made when he flew; sometimes, she could even hear it from inside her Poké Ball. "That's okay!" the feline cub smiled back. "Shock? I didn't feel a thing! If you shocked me, it's nothing like my sister Gleam back home! I miss her. Master left her at home and I don't know why."

There would be so many new friends to meet and so much exploring to do! Kiara shared several personality traits with Shalin, including a penchant to stick her nose everywhere. "Wanna explore together? Hop on my back! If anything, it'll be good to learn for when I grow up! Master loves riding my grown-up friends!"

Sparkie smiled bashfully. She'd been really nervous about this Litleo at first, but she was actually really nice! She kind of reminded Sparkie of Mama Julia, actually. "Oh! Um... Mama Julia calls me Sparkie."

[break][break]Sparkie followed Kiara's gaze across the Daycare's enclosure, worried for a moment that something was wrong. But aside from a few concerned glances, the other Pokémon seemed to be minding their own business now that the commotion was over. The Pichu sat down next to Kiara and listened as the larger Pokémon told stories of her trainer's other Pokémon. They all sounded so energetic and lively; Sparkie wasn't sure she'd be able to handle having such a rambunctious family.

[break][break]She was relieved that her accidental shock hadn't hurt Kiara. Sparkie was pretty self-conscious about her inability to control her electricity, especially when she accidentally zapped someone. Julia even had to wear rubber gloves when handling her so she wouldn't get hurt.

[break][break]Emboldened by Kiara's kindness, Sparkie shared a little bit about her own "siblings," as well. There was Big Sis Lazuli, who was always kind and gentle and sang Sparkie to sleep whenever she got upset, and Big Bro Chester, who was just as expressive and adventurous as Mama Julia while being really, really smart. "They went on a scary mission with Mama Julia," she explained. "Mama didn't want me to get hurt, so she left me here. I hope they come back soon..."

[break][break]She thought about Kiara's offer for a moment. Exploring a strange place seemed scary, but... maybe it wouldn't be so bad with a friend? And riding on another Pokémon's back made Sparkie think about how Mama Julia sometimes rode on Chester's back for long trips. And yet... "I dunno... You go really fast. Won't I fall off?"

"You're a sweet one, Sparkie!" Kiara couldn't help but reply with a purr. "Mama Julia must be just as sweet as my Master!" She listened to Sparkie's stories about Julia's other Pokémon; they both seemed just as sweet even though they were all grown up.

When Sparkie expressed concerns about her ability to control her electricity, Kiara kept up her positive attitude, clearly wanting it to spread. "I'm sure you'll get better at it! All you gotta do is practice! Like this!" Kiara cantered to the edge of the fenced field and faced a metal sign not too far out of its bounds. She inhaled deeply, then exhaled a small stream of flames toward the sign; a Flamethrower attack at minimum power. The line of fire soared mostly wide right, though part of it did catch the corner. "It's hard for me, too! But you gotta keep practicing!"

Sparkie had mentioned Mama Julia was on a dangerous mission. "Oh, Master isn't in any danger at all! She used to take me to this place full of these big, bright, and loud machines. I loved watching her dance like a...Zar-Ina? It's this big green Pokémon that dances! Anyway, it looked like she was having fun! I didn't mind the loud music at all; after every time she danced, she looked so excited! I don't get it, but it's fun watching her! Then one week we went, and some mean humans wouldn't let me in! And that's why I'm here!"

The Pichu seemed a bit concerned about riding Kiara. Understandably so; even as Litleo, they could put on some real speed, and were nothing to be trifled with in the wild. "That's what my fur is for! Just hold on tight! I'll be okay! Now how about we see what we can find out here! Maybe it will make Mama Julia get here faster?" With that, the Litleo walked back to Sparkie's side and sat down, beckoning her to climb aboard.

A tiny crackle of electricity jumped on Sparkie's cheeks as she blushed at being called "sweet." "Mama Julia's the best," she said.

[break][break]She watched with wide, amazed eyes as Kiara took aim at a signpost and blew a small stream of fire at it. "Wow..." she whispered, not seeming to care that most of it had missed. "How do you do that without hurting yourself?" That was her other big issue right now: She tended to stun herself with her own zaps, especially if she'd built up a lot of electricity.

[break][break]She could only tilt her head at Kiara's mention of whatever a "Zar-Ina" was, nor did she seem to know anything about this place with bright lights and loud noises. Kiara made it sound like such a fun place right until the end, though. She frowned. "That's not nice of them..."

[break][break]Her ear twitched thoughtfully. Now that she thought about it, that was a lot like how Mama Julia rode on Chester by just hopping on his back and holding onto his feathers. He never seemed to mind it, either. She didn't really get how it'd make Mama Julia come back faster, but if it was safe for her, then maybe it was safe for Sparkie, too.

[break][break]"Okay!" It seems thinking about Julia had given her the courage she needed to climb onto the Litleo's back and feel around for a place to hold onto. "Like this?"

Thankfully, the ground near the sign was still a little damp thanks to being in the shade; otherwise, the demonstration could have started a fire! "That's easy! Don't give it your all," Kiara answered. "The last time I turned up the heat, my tummy hurt." She, of course, was referring to her chest, but was too young to know the difference. "Try turning down the...not heat, what's the word...I can't think of the word. But try that!"

The fire-type felt Sparkie crawling atop her back, the Pichu grabbing a piece of her fur to keep herself secure. "Just like that! All aboard the Kiara Express!" she cried, perhaps a bit too loudly. At least it was loud enough to alert nearby Pokémon to get out of the way. "Last stop: the other side of this field!"

Rather than take off at full speed like she did when she crashed into Sparkie before, Kiara smoothly accelerated along the fence line, making a gentle curve that followed its corners. She let out a short-lived purr that mimicked the sound of a revving engine as she came out of the end of the long curve. As soon as the purring stopped, she picked up the pace, running alongside the long fence as though she was starting a chase-down of a small meal. While it wasn't as fast as Kiara was going when she met Sparkie, she was still running at a clip well beyond what the young electric-type was capable of even if her life depended on it.

"Don't give it my all...?" Again, Sparkie tilted her head as she tried to think of what Kiara meant. If Kiara turned down the heat of her flames, did that mean that Sparkie should turn down her zaps? "How do I do that?"

[break][break]Kiara's excitement was infectious, putting a little smile on Sparkie's face. She held on tight as Kiara began running along the fence, literally purring like an engine in a way that made the Pichu giggle.

[break][break]"Whoa!" Even though Kiara was accelerating gradually, Sparkie was still surprised by the force of the Litleo's speed. She pulled herself close to Kiara's back for more stability. She tried to look ahead of her to fully appreciate the ride, but she kept having to blink tears out of her eyes from the wind whipping into them. She just wasn't used to going this fast! Her grip on Kiara's fur tightened, but she was too worried about not falling off to be concerned about possibly hurting her new friend.

Kiara didn't answer Sparkie's question immediately; she was focused on maintaining her balance. Felines were notably more difficult to ride than canines, what with how much extra power there was in their strides to propel them at some of the fastest speeds among land-bound Pokémon. A few energetic Pokémon such as a Rockruff and Electrike, ran alongside Kiara in an effort to race her to her destination. The electric-type briefly outpaced the Litleo, but did not have the endurance to hold the lead.

"Having fun up there yet?" she asked her passenger, making gentle turns across the field to ease Sparkie into the big finale she had planned once they reached the other side. Of course, at the speed she was running, even shallow turns had quite a bit of force behind them. That might be why the Pichu's hold on her fur was so tight. She didn't mind, though! As long as they were both having a great time, it was all good!

"Oh, I wanna try something I saw Master and sister Gleam did once! It looked really fun!" As the two rapidly approached the fence on the opposite side of the field, Kiara picked up even more speed; she had to be going close to full gallop by now. With a cute but still loud roar to attract the attention of other Pokémon, the speeding fire-type shifted her weight in one direction but faced another, drifting in a wide arc near the fence's corners. To Sparkie, it may have felt like being on a speed-focused roller coaster at its peak G-force. She dreamed of hearing Master's giddy whoop if she could pull that off as a grown-up! For now, hearing the excited cry of a thrilled Pichu would do.

Sparkie was definitely feeling the extra power behind those strides as she rode atop Kiara. Yet Kiara's fur was surprisingly grippable. Maybe it was because Sparkie was comparatively small? Either way, it helped her feel more steady. She watched as two other Pokémon joined in to create an impromptu race. The green one was able to pull in the lead for a little while, but Kiara managed to outpace it. Sparkie let out a proud little giggle at that.

[break][break]Was she having fun? "I think so!" she called back. She wasn't quite sure how to describe this feeling at first. She was kind of afraid, but also not really? She didn't feel like she was in any real danger, at least. Even if she fell off, she trusted Kiara to make it all okay. And imagining Mama Julia riding like this on Chester made even that worry grow smaller and smaller. Mama Julia had done this tons of times and never gotten hurt, after all.

[break][break]"Yeah! Yeah, this is fun!" She still had to blink a lot to keep her vision clear, but she was getting more used to it as the run went on.

[break][break]Her eyes widened when she saw that they were racing toward the end of the fence. "Uh... Kiara...?!"

[break][break]The Litleo's drift made Sparkie's tummy feel weightless. It was weird, but it kind of tickled, which made her let out a giggly yell. She didn't know what a roller coaster was, but if she ever rode one, she'd be brought right back to this moment, where she was holding on for dear life without really being afraid.

[break][break]Though it probably would have been better with a seatbelt. Or, in this case, a saddle and reins.

Kiara could feel a fairly strong tug at her fur when she drifted across the end of the field, tearing up a few blades of grass in the process. Maybe she overdid it? On second thought, Sparkie was giggling hysterically. She had to be having the time of her life up there! If that was the kind of reaction she got from a Pichu, she couldn't wait to do this with Master when she grew up!

The Litleo gradually decelerated as she approached the canopy covering the daycare's back door. When it looked like she was going to slow to a walk and let Kiara off, Shalin's fire-type cat had one more trick up her sleeve. "Hold on tight!" Kiara cried with a sly smile on her face. She kicked with her rear legs and shifted her weight around much like a rodeo Pokémon would. She lightly thrashed a few times, doing her best to mimic motion she had seen from Master's Persian back in Johto.

After a few kicks, Kiara sat down near the open door and let Sparkie dismount--just as Shalin walked back to pick up her Pokémon. She saw the Litleo's rodeo antics and couldn't help but smile. "Just like her sisters..." she couldn't help but giggle as she whistled for the cub. Kiara raised a paw to wave goodbye before following her Trainer, who was drenched in sweat, up to the front desk. Shalin paid the daycare fee to recover Kiara's Poké Ball and recall her. Time to return to her Secret Base in Petalburg Woods and pass out for the night!
